Flat Rates

This means that you know exactly how much you’re spending and what exposure you’re getting for the money you spend.

Most online advertising is billed per 1000 impressions of your ad or per click on your ad. These methods are fundamentally flawed and make it harder for you to know if the exposure your ad is getting is even relevant. The reason being that, unfortunately, some websites do pay outside sources to drive traffic to their site, to click on ads within their site and to browse or refresh pages – all to increase the perception of how many visitors, impressions and clicks their ads actually receive.

This is the most common method of billing for news sites. At the time this page was created, the Okotoks Western Wheel displays their charges as being between $17 and $35 per 1000 impressions. The Calgary Sun is showing their rates to be between $18 and $24 per 1000 impressions for standard ads.

Let’s do some math on some scenarios you may see in our advertising:

$400 for 100,000 impressions = $4 per 1000 impressions

$400 for 50,000 impressions = $8 per 1000 impressions

Weekly: $100 for 10,000 impressions = $10 per 1000 impressions

Our sidebar ads experience a minimum of 50,000 impressions per month, but in our current growth pattern we know that this is a conservative estimate.

With our competitors, once the number of impressions has matched the budget you agree to, your ad stops displaying.

With the Gateway Gazette, your ad continues to display 24/7 for the same monthly flat rate for as many months as choose. And as our traffic increases your price doesn’t increase, you simply benefit from even more exposure.

Dedicated Landing Pages (e-Flyer)

Many online ads give you a tiny rectangle or square that does nothing more than link to the home page of your website. Many online viewers are hesitant to click on ads because they may not be completely clear on what the ad is about or where that click just might take them. Even if they do brave the click, they often find themselves lost in a busy or poorly designed website that they struggle with figuring out how to maneuver.

With the Gateway Gazette you get a dedicated landing page that we call our “e-Flyer”. This page can include whatever you would like to include relevant to your ad. Basically, this means that every ad you place with the Gateway Gazette gives you the equivalent of a full page print ad – or more. As new readers become more comfortable with the way the Gateway Gazette works, they become more comfortable on clicking the ads thus accessing more details about the information you have to offer them. But even without the clicks, your company name is constantly on repetitive display, via your sidebar ads, to our readers – your customers and prospects.

Plus, it’s important to note that clicking on the sidebar ad is only one of the ways that customers can get to your e-Flyer page. Other ways include the links we provide through social media promotion and every e-Flyer is optimized for search engines. Plus, ideally you want to include different links to pages within your website if you have one so that they count as “back links” to your website, which will ultimately help your website show up higher in search engine results. Back Links from a news website are deemed to be good quality back links and will often provide more reputability for your website.

As for the type of stuff you can include on your e-Flyer/Landing Page – there really are no limits. Pretty much everything such as text, images, links, audio, video and forms. So don’t be afraid to get creative!

As far as the Google Search results, please understand that this is a side-benefit that some e-flyer pages will gain more from than others. We aren’t selling ‘search result advertising’ so a Google search of your company name won’t always immediately get you results from our site. But over time and with enough consistency, you will start to see better search engine ranking too.

Traditional Philosophies

Digital advertising has many things going for it and against it. The trick to it though is to not lose sight of what is truly important when it comes to effective advertising. With so many dazzling options it’s easy to get wooed into over-looking the things that really matter.

So what matters? The same things that have mattered for the last century.

  • Headline/Hook/Eye-catching Imagery
  • Credibility
  • Compelling call to action
  • Consistency
  • Frequency

A point often overlooked by businesses is that advertising budgets are better invested only in the size of audience that you can sustain reaching consistently for at least 6 months. A start and stop approach to advertising is a recipe for disaster. Sleep erases advertising and every time you stop you’re starting from ground zero again when you restart.

It has also been proven repeatedly over the last century that you must connect with a prospective client a minimum of 7 times and in our current society of incredible distractions it’s arguable that it will take many more connections than that to help your message stick with a prospect. So with that in mind, there is no argument against the fact that it is far better to reach 1,000 targeted people 10 times than to reach 10,000 random people once.

This is another reason why the Gateway Gazette advertising is structured the way that it is. A flat rate fee for 24/7 exposure. The price point is based on a minimum level of exposure for the ad. As the site, traffic and readership grows – advertisers gain extra benefit for increased exposure, they are not penalized with increased costs.

With the introduction of the Internet, came what everyone assumed would be delightful and accurate statistics on readers and usage etc. While this has been the case to some extent, sadly there will always be those people who insist on corrupting the system. As a result, many statistics about site visitors are somewhat less than accurate. It has become standard practice for larger entities to engage services of things such as ‘click farms’ – this is to increase the number of impressions and clicks that ads receive.  For some sites they use it as a means to prove that advertising on their site is valuable for others it’s a means to get more money out of advertisers.

This isn’t to say that all stats are inaccurate or corrupt. But it is a heads up to at least be aware. Plus, there are many different ways that stats can be reported, which can distort the things that will really matter to you for your advertising.

We have stats that show us an average of 20,000 unique visitors per month and 200,000 page views collectively. But we also have numerous sites and pages within our system, not all of which would be relevant to your advertising and we know that not all traffic is quality traffic.

Currently, in our main Gateway Gazette section of articles (where our standard ads are displayed), our prices are set to reflect an active readership of about 4,000 to 6,000 readers with an average of 7,000 to 9,000 page views per month. In our opinion, THESE are realistic and down-to-earth stats that actually mean something to our advertisers and reflect the prices we charge for advertising, which are set to make a return on investment not only possible for our advertisers, but far more likely. And even though our reach will often exceed these targets, our pricing will not increase until such time as there is a significant increase in this traffic. By significant, we’re talking more like five to six times these targets just within this section alone.
